I work in my library alone, so this course is a great way learn more about this industry. I am passionate about libraries and a quick learner, however, I feel that I cannot join in local school librarian groups as I am not degree qualified (yet!).
Working in a library is a career change for me. As a youngster I loved art and books. Being from a sporty family, I was always the odd one out. I was dismissed as “the quiet arty girl with her head in a book”. Even though in my heart I knew that I would love to work in a library, I was never encouraged to do so. So I was accepted into architectural drafting at the Sydney Institute and worked at a local council.
It wasn’t until I had children, that I thought seriously about changing careers. I started reading to my first son as soon as I could. I would take them to the local library every week and we would go into the city to visit the art gallery, museum and state library. My mind was made up. As soon as the time came to go back to work, it would definitely be in a library.
My sons are now seven and five and I have been working at the school library for one year. I feel this is the best decision I have ever made. Not only can I be creative and find new exciting books to read, I get to be an internet guru!
